Special Pathogen Treatment Centers (SPTC)
Overview
There are only three Special Pathogen Treatment Centers (SPTCs) within the state of California, which are Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, Kaiser Permanente Los Angeles Medical Center, and Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center. All three SPTCs are located in Los Angeles County. SPTCs are hospitals with enhanced capabilities and capacity to care for highly infectious diseases, such as Ebola or COVID-19, and serve as hubs for the State (and Cedars-Sinai for National) levels of the special pathogen system. These hospitals are continuously ready and available to assess and treat emerging infectious disease patients.
Through collaboration with the National Emerging Special Pathogens Training & Education Center (NETEC) and coordination with the National Special Pathogens System (NSPS), the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, California Department of Public Health, Los Angeles County Public Health, Los Angeles County Emergency Medical Services Agency, and our High-Risk Ambulance partners, Los Angeles County continues to set the standard for treatment of emerging infectious diseases and special pathogens in the nation.
